EXTRACT FROM AN OFFICIAL LETTER DATED 24TH APRIL ADDRESSED TO THE COLONIAL OFFICE BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG MEDICAL DEGREES EMERGENCY COMMITTEE (Mr. T. M. Hazlerigg)
T.M.
The ceremony held in March aroused very considerable interest not only locally but also in Kwang Tung and the fact that an Order of His Majesty in Council had been made for the express purpose of granting Degrees to Chinese students created a great impression as indicative of the interest shown by His Majesty's Government.
I would venture to suggest that the political effect of the good impression thus created might be enhanced and progress towards the resumption of the life of the University expedited, if a select Committee, chosen from the members of the Committee now sitting in London and comprising at least one representative of a British University and a representative of the Colonial Office, were to visit the Colony at an early date with a view to investigating the affairs of the University on the spot and reporting to the main Committee."
